What Are My Post-Pregnancy Body Contouring Procedure Options?

Categories:

Post-pregnancy body contouring is a combination of surgeries designed to reshape a woman’s body after pregnancy and childbirth. Although each person’s bundle of procedures is unique, post-pregnancy body contouring typically consist of procedures that focus on the breasts and abdomen, as these areas are heavily impacted by pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.

During your consultation, Dr Choy will assess your concerns and goals and explain your options. Together, you will settle upon a combination of the procedures below.

Breast

Breast Augmentation

A woman’s breasts grow significantly during pregnancy and nursing to accommodate her milk supply. Although your breasts may eventually return to roughly their pre-pregnancy size, they may not look like the breasts you knew before motherhood. They may look small and deflated and feel soft rather than full and firm.

Breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants can enhance the size, fullness and shape of your breasts.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • Your breasts have lost volume and shape
  • Your breasts have a deflated appearance
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • You want to change your body proportions

Breast Fat Grafting

Sometimes called a “natural breast augmentation”, fat grafting is an option for women who wish to enhance their bust without breast implants. Fat grafting is the process of extracting excess fat from a donor area (such as the belly, thighs or hips) with liposuction, and then purifying the fat in order to inject it into the breasts.

To qualify for this procedure, you must have a sufficient amount of fat to harvest for reinjection and realistic expectations about what fat grafting can achieve.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • You do not want foreign materials in your body
  • You are seeking a modest increase in breast size
  • You want to remove unwanted fat from another area of your body
  • You want less scarring than an implant-based augmentation

Breast Lift

One of the most common concerns for mums is drooping breasts. A breast lift repositions the breast tissue, leaving you with firmer breasts that sit back up on your chest wall. A breast lift also helps with excess skin, repositions the nipple and areola, and enhances breast symmetry and shape.

Breast augmentation is often done in conjunction with a breast lift. In the event that existing breast volume is adequate, a breast lift alone may yield the desired result.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • Your breast tissue is drooping
  • Your breasts have lost shape and firmness
  • You have loose, excess breast skin
  • Your nipples and areolas point downwards

Breast Reduction

The breasts don’t always return to a comfortable size after pregnancy. For some women, the breasts stay enlarged, becoming a burden in many ways. Women with overly large breasts often complain of pain in their upper body, skin irritation and poor posture, among other things.

A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to contour the breast into a lighter, smaller shape. The nipple and areola are repositioned to match the new breast.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • You’re experiencing chronic back, shoulder and neck pain
  • You have difficulty engaging in sports and exercise
  • You find it hard to maintain good posture
  • You struggle to find clothing that fits off the rack

Nipple & Areola Correction

While pregnant, your nipples may become larger and more pronounced. You may also notice a darkening and expanding of the areolas. These changes occur as your breasts stretch to accommodate their growing size and your body prepares for the possibility of breastfeeding. Your nipples may or may not naturally return to their original size and shape.

Nipple and areola correction can address a range of cosmetic concerns.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • Your areolas are stretched out or irregularly shaped
  • Your areolas are not proportionate with your breast size
  • Your nipples are droopy or excessively long
  • Your nipples are not symmetrical

Body

Abdominoplasty

Pregnancy stretches both the muscles and the skin of the abdomen, often resulting in muscle separation and stretch marks. These conditions cannot be improved by weight loss and exercise alone. Many mums also struggle with pockets of fat that refuse to budge no matter how healthy their lifestyle.

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty rejuvenates the abdominal area both aesthetically and functionally, leaving you with a firmer, flatter and more toned midsection.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • Your tummy skin is loose
  • You have stubborn belly fat
  • Your abdominal muscles have separated (diastasis recti)
  • You have stretch marks below your navel

Liposuction

Liposuction can help reshape areas of your body affected by excess fatty tissue that resists diet and exercise. This can be a good options for patients with good skin elasticity and abdominal tone and no stretch marks. For those with loose skin, weakened muscles and stretch marks in the lower abdomen, a tummy tuck may be more suitable.

New liposuction technologies such as ultrasound-guided or laser-assisted liposuction are available options.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • You have stubborn localised fat deposits
  • You have reached or gotten close to your ideal weight with diet and exercise
  • You desire a flatter tummy and a smaller waist
  • You want to contour other areas of your body, such as your thighs, hips, arms or flanks

Labiaplasty

After giving birth to a baby, especially after a vaginal delivery, the labia may undergo changes. Stretching and asymmetry can lead to physical discomfort and other concerns. Labiaplasty can address both functional and aesthetic issues that may arise after childbirth.

Labiaplasty procedures typically focus on altering the appearance of the inner labia. Related procedures include clitoral hood reduction, vaginoplasty and labia majora surgery.

You may wish to include this procedure if:

  • Your inner labia have stretched or torn
  • Your inner labia protrude beyond your outer labia
  • Your labia cause discomfort during physical activities
  • You feel an uncomfortable level of friction in tight clothing, such as legging or swimsuits
